FOR SALE: Vintage 1928 Ludwig ‘Super-Ludwig’ Concert Model 14x6.5” Brass Snare Drum

When I first received this drum, it was in rough shape and needed some attention. The brass shell had been hand-painted, the heads were torn, and the wires were damaged.

Since then, I’ve done some light restoration to bring the drum back to playable condition.

The brass shell, which is the same as the original Black Beauty, was stripped of the paint, revealing a beautifully patinaed surface. I believe the drum may have originally had a ‘Ludwigold’ finish, as there are traces of gold around the bearing edges.

The tube lugs and hardware have aged over time, with some gold plating still visible. There are a few small cracks in some of the lugs. They are holding up fine, though you can see the cracks. About half of the internal screws that hold the lugs were missing, so I replaced them. They now secure the lugs to the shell well. One end/guide for a lug had been replaced before I got the drum. Inside the drum is a signature dated 1944.

The original snare wires, which were individually adjustable, were in poor shape. Due to the rarity of this drum, finding replacement wires is can be a challenge. Fortunately, a new set of wires was made by @bibinzoran, and they fit perfectly, making the drum playable again.

The snare mechanism works well, though it has slight resistance when turning the wires on and off. The mechanism still snaps on and off properly, and the adjustable knobs function smoothly. There are two additional small holes each side of the mechanism. There is also a slight bend in part of the cradle where the snare wires rest, but this doesn’t affect the seating of the wires on the drum head.

The original calfskin heads were ripped and unusable. Interestingly, when I removed them, I found a signature from 1944 on the underside, suggesting they hadn’t been replaced since then! Modern heads do fit (although they are a bit tight). I’ve now installed a Remo Fiberskyn on the batter side and a Remo Hazy Ambassador on the snare side.

With new heads and wires, this is a great playable and collectible piece.

As featured in the 1938/39 Beverley catalogue as ‘the drum you’d never wish to part with’. 14x6.5”, “chromium” over brass shell with spun over edges. The cast lugs are in generally good shape, with some plating loss and bubbling. Slotted tension rods throughout. The individual snare wires are in generally ok and hold tension well. There is a typical strainer and butt plate under the end covers so you could fit standard wires. New Remo Skyntone batter head for an authentic calf skin sound and a Hazy on the snare side. Diecast hoops are in good condition with some minor wear throughout. They are slightly out of round but hold tension on the head fine. The shell is generally good with some minor dents, wear and scratches to the chromium finish. The original rubber on the damper had disintegrated, so I have replaced with a felt one which works great. I’ve never seen another complete Parallel drum like this, the only other one reference online is from a few years ago but this wasn’t complete.

Saved from a barn, along with the bass drum previously posted, where it had been sat for 45+ years. Original heads were long gone, metalwork was prettyyy dirty, and had some previous woodworm 🥺

After a good clean and new heads & wires, she’s now sitting pretty with the original finish and metalwork patina’d beautifully.

This arrived with missing / broken lugs, missing tension rods, no heads, flaking hoops and was pretty dirty after sitting in a rehearsal studio for a number of years.

It’s now a great players example with correct parts replaced, new heads and new diecast hoops.

Possibly one of my favourite ever restorations. This very rare @beverleydrums 12x8, 14x14, 18x14 was in desperate need of some serious love.

It arrived with aftermarket Pearl mounts and legs on the tom and bass drum along with cracked/split wrap, poor epoxy and filler from previous badly done repairs.

I salvaged what wrap I could and sent it off to be redone at @ukdrumwraps where it was scanned in and recreated as close to the original as possible.

Mark @olddrummerrestorations removed the previous ‘repairs’ and filled holes, sanded the shells and rewrapped with the new (original) wrap. The hoops were re-sprayed (thankfully the original wrap survived on these) and chrome all cleaned and replaced with original parts.

She’s now with her new owner @ where I’m sure she’ll be loved and played for years to come.

A beautiful and exceptionally rare 1930s Premier D

A beautiful and exceptionally rare 1930s Premier Dominion Super, finished in Sunset Pearl with Full Dress gold and green sparkle diamonds.

The wrap would have been a very vibrant red and gold when new. The red has aged really well and the gold has faded in places but with some remnants still showing through.

The gold and green sparkle diamonds were an extra and provided as a stick-on option.

The hardware finish was appropriately named ‘Regal Gold’ which is either an early form of plating or a painted finish. This has now worn off on the lugs showing the casting metal underneath but is still visible throughout.

Being the Dominion ‘Super’ this has two sets of wires, one set in the usual place under the drum, the other sitting just under the top head providing extra sensitivity for the player.

All in all this is truly special drum, having seen only 1 other in this finish and none in this configuration.
